Guest Networks and Why You Need One
February 26, 2024
Home network security is more important than ever as cybercrime rates continue to rise. Without proper security measures, your data and information can be vulnerable to hackers and cybercriminals. While most people are aware of the outside threats to their network, many don’t consider the threats house guests can pose.
Visitors with direct access to your wi-fi network pose a security risk to your devices and data. Laptops, video games, smart tvs – every device connected to your home internet can be accessed by any individual with the username and password. While your friends and family may not intend to sabotage your data, connecting their own devices could spread malware across your entire network.
How do you prevent this? Create a guest network.
A guest network creates a separate access point within your router giving visitors access to an isolated wi-fi network. Interference with the operating systems of your personal devices and any sensitive data is prohibited. Separating networks prevents accidental damage and compromise.
Experts also suggest using a guest network for smart appliances and home security systems to ensure a reliable connection and prevent network congestion. In addition, any stored login information from your primary network is protected.
Securing your data and safeguarding your devices is important. MidSouth Fiber Internet subscribers can create a guest network anytime through the MidSouth Fiber App.
