Hosting for the Holidays
October 25, 2025

Hosting friends and family for the holidays can be both joyous and a little overwhelming. Whether you’re a seasoned entertainer or doing it for the first time, a bit of planning can turn a good gathering into a great one. Here are some smart tips to help you host with confidence and ease.
1. Get Ahead with Groceries
Avoid the crowds and stress of last-minute shopping by heading to the grocery store early and making a detailed list. Having all your essentials in one trip means you’ll feel more relaxed during the festivities. Consider using curbside pickup or delivery for convenience and to free up more time for welcoming guests.
2. Consider Dietary Needs & Preferences
Ask ahead if any guests have dietary restrictions (vegetarian, gluten-free, allergies) and plan a few options accordingly. Even just one extra dish for someone who needs it speaks volumes about thoughtful hosting.
3. Let Guests Help with the Menu
One of the best things about holiday hosting is sharing. Invite friends and family to bring a side dish or dessert—this not only cuts down on your prep but adds variety and flavor to the table. Choose one or two signature dishes you love to make, and let others fill in the rest. It fosters community and lightens your load.
4. Make It Kid-Friendly
If children will be around, set them up for fun so the adults can relax. Create a basket of age-appropriate toys or coloring supplies, print some holiday-themed coloring pages, and designate a cozy corner where kids can play safely. A little forethought goes a long way toward keeping young guests happy (and your home calmer).

5. Set Up a Guest Wi-Fi Network
With everyone in the house—phones, tablets, streaming devices—it helps to give guests their own network. That way, your personal devices stay protected and your main network runs smoothly.
Here’s how to set it up in the MidSouth Fiber app:
-
Open the app and go to Network on the bottom menu.
-
Under Wi-FI Networks, choose Add Network.
-
Select Guest for the network type.
-
Enter a name (SSID) for your guest network.
- Create a password for your guests.
-
Choose a security type.
-
Enable Isolation (to keep guests from accessing your main devices).
-
Under Duration, choose how long the network should be active: select Permanent or Temporary to set a custom time.
-
Tap Save—you’re all set!
Having a guest network means everyone can stay connected while your home remains secure and efficient.
6. Send Guests Home with Leftovers
Let the good times roll a little longer—and avoid an overflowing fridge. Have containers ready (or ask guests to bring their own) so people can pack up leftovers and enjoy the delicious spread again later. It reduces waste and brings one more moment of joy after everyone departs.
7. Plan for After-Hours Relaxation
When the main event comes to an end, it’s nice to have a little something for winding down. Offer cozy blankets in a corner for anyone who wants to relax, or have hot-chocolate or coffee ready for late-night chatter.
8. Clean-Up Made Easy
Prepping for clean-up ahead of time can reduce post-party fatigue. Place recycling and trash bins in a clear and accessible location. Use disposable or easy-wash serving pieces when appropriate.
Plus, encourage guests to help with clearing dishes or loading the dishwasher—it’s okay to ask!
9. Stay Flexible & Enjoy the Moment
Even the best plans can flex—if something goes awry (dish runs late, someone’s arriving later than expected), embrace it. The heart of holiday gatherings is connection, not perfection. Take a breath, smile and enjoy the time with your people.
